A core business of Women's Health Action is to support, promote and protect breastfeeding.
We have two breastfeeding advocates working in the Auckland area.
Annually we organise a national media campaign to highlight World Breastfeeding Week.
A special area of interest is advocating for breastfeeding friendly workplaces.

Breastfeeding petition

The petition to request action by parliament to protect the rights of breastfeeding women and children that was circulated around New Zealand by Liz Weatherly has closed.
“The Health Committee with Steve Chadwick as chair has finished looking into the complaint and has come up with two recommendations for parliament. They are:
1 We recommend to the Government that it explore legislation options for protecting an infant’s right to receive nutrition, for example through amending the Human Rights Act 1993.
2 We recommend to the Government that it explore legislation options for protecting breastfeeding in public places, for example through amending the Human Rights Act 1993.
If you would like to read the whole report a 5 page document it can be found at:
http://www.clerk.parliament.govt.nz/Content/SelectCommitteeReports/hepet02139.pdf

In August 2005 the cabinet’s response was not to follow the recommendations by the Health Select Committee. Therefore the development for legislation to protect breastfeeding was dropped.
