New Healh Promotion 'best practice' website launched

http://www.idmbestpractices.ca

Two major goals of the website are to promote discussion of best practices
ideas, and to provide information to make the application of best practices
easier.
May's features include:
- a reflection piece by Jan Ritchie, University of New South Wales(Sydney,
Australia)
- a profile of Rishia Burke, community-based researcher and evaluator
(Burlington, Canada)
- jottings on "three kinds of practice" by one of the website editors
- a brief description of the resource <http://www.surveykey.com>
The website defines best practices as consistency between practice (processes and activities), underpinnings (values, theories and beliefs, and evidence), and understanding of the environment.
It is also open to other perspectives, and contributions related to any best
practices approach are very welcome - experiences, questions, insights, resources, people profiles.
New Health Promotion & Best Practices websites You might be interested in the following websites that Michael Goodstadt has been developing: 1. http://www.bestpractices-healthpromotion.com/:
this website is devoted to making available the best practice work that Barbara Kahan and Michael (and many collaborators) have been undertaking during the past number of years. This site includes extensive elaboration of the "Interactive Domain Model of Best Practices in Health Promotion" (Kahan & Goodstadt, 2001) and its components (i.e., values, theory, evidence, a health promotion understanding of the environments, and appropriate responses to health-related issues, environment-related issues, and research/evaluation). In addition, it includes: frameworks and resources to guide the identification and use of evidence in health promotion practice, extensive discussion of evaluation/research methods, and a host of resources, links, etc., relevant to the practice of health promotion.
2. His "teaching" websites (i.e., associated with my University of Toronto course "Health Promotion Strategies: Taking a Best Practices Approach"):
1. http://www.bestpractices-healthpromotion.com/strategies/: this website is the more general introduction to my course, its goals, requirements etc.
2. http://www.bestpractices-healthpromotion.com/coursereadings/: this website provides very extensive resources related to health promotion in general and best practices in particular--including extensive recommended readings lists, bibliographies, PowerPoint presentations, links to other sites and on-line resources.

Health systems have done and are doing much to tackle the complex and daunting problem of poverty and health. This book describes 12 initiatives already undertaken in 10 WHO Member States: Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom.
It documents WHO's preliminary findings on how health systems can help to alleviate poverty, and reaches three main conclusions: that these systems can take effective action to improve the health of the poor, that they can sometimes represent an additional barrier for the poor and that more knowledge, training and capacity building in this area are urgently needed. It is hoped that the information presented here will contribute to WHO's efforts to help countries across the length and breadth of Europe improve health and increase equity by tackling poverty and its effects on health.
