Researchers from the Donald Beasley Institute are currently working on a project that seeks to understand disabled people’s access to, and experiences of, a wide range of abortion services in Aotearoa New Zealand. The research findings will feed into the New Zealand Governments 5-year review of the Abortion Legislation Act 2020. It will help the government and healthcare providers to deliver more equitable, inclusive and accessible abortion services in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In this project, they are looking for 20 disabled people to answer a questionnaire. They would like to hear from people who have accessed abortion services or have thought about using abortion services since 2020. You can access the questionnaire here:

In this project, disability is interpreted broadly and is inclusive of anyone who: experiences mental distress/psychosocial disability; has a chronic illness; is neurodivergent (i.e. is autistic, has fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, ADHD, a traumatic brain injury etc); is physically disabled; is blind or has low vision; is D/deaf or hard-of-hearing; or has a learning (intellectual) disability.

¡ Have connections with whānau using maternity and or child health services 
¡ Have the ability to take a wider Waikato District view as well as a local community perspective.

This is rewarding mahi! Advice given by consumers aids the goal that all people and cultures within the community are equally represented, and that differences and diversity are embraced in a non-judgemental way.
