Infant feeding resources for ECE services

Women’s Health Action has partnered with the Heart Foundation to create practical, evidence-based resources for Early Childhood Education (ECE) services.
These materials support kaimahi (staff) to safely store, prepare, and handle expressed breastmilk and infant formula, helping to create breastfeeding friendly early learning environments.

Handling of Expressed Breastmilk and Formula

These resource factsheets are intended for use in manuals or booklets. The larger A3 posters can be printed out and stuck to the fridge or on a wall, in an area where bottles of breastmilk or formula are prepared.

These resources are designed for everyday use in ECE centres:

  • A4 factsheets – ideal for inclusion in centre manuals or procedure booklets
  • A3 posters – perfect for display on fridges or near bottle preparation areas

Feeding Pēpi Milk Procedure

The Feeding Pēpi Milk Procedure supports ECE services to develop clear, safe practices for handling breastmilk and infant formula.
It also encourages māmā and kaiako to maintain breastfeeding when pēpi starts childcare.
Centres are encouraged to adapt the guide to fit their own policies and context.

The guide covers:

  • Safe milk storage and preparation
  • Thawing and warming milk
  • Feeding methods
  • Staff training and implementation
  • Becoming a breastfeeding-friendly centre and respecting whānau practices
  • Maintaining accurate feeding records
