Formula Feeding and Returning to Work

Many of the support systems for breastfeeding mothers are just as valuable for parents returning to work who formula feed their baby and want to maintain the attachment established during maternity leave. You may wish to take regular breaks to feed your baby at work or to visit your baby during the day.

If you’re breastfeeding or expressing: New Zealand law requires employers, as far as reasonable and practicable, to provide appropriate facilities and breaks.

If you’re bottle-feeding (formula or expressed milk) breaks or visits are usually arranged through flexible work options. These are not the same legal entitlements as breastfeeding/expressing breaks, but many employers will accommodate them.

Have an open, respectful conversation with your manager about what would support you and your baby.
